Yes, Salzburg has a lot of cultural things to see. But whoever thought there’s nothing else to do, couldn’t be more wrong. Here are three outdoor activities close to the city centre for all the adventurers out there.

Surfing in the Almkanal

In tourist shops all around the city, you can purchase t-shirts and cups with “no kangaroos in Austria” signs on them. Nevertheless, there’s one thing we stole from our friends down under. It may sound quite surprising but Salzburg has developed a vibrant surfer scene in the past couple of years. Just a short bus ride from the old town you can find an artificial wave, half a meter high and 4.5 meters wide, built in the centuries-old water supply system of the city. The wave is open to everyone and attracts surfers and viewers alike. And for everyone not too keen on surfing, the canal with its crystal-clear ice cold water from the mountains is still a good spot for a refreshment.

Looking at the mountains surrounding the city it is easy to guess that the country of Salzburg is a paradise for alpine climbers. But in order to find a via ferrata, one does not even have to leave the city centre. A little hidden at the end of Linzergasse, climbers can crest the Kapuzinerberg on different routes with ranging difficulty and are rewarded with a unique view over the old town of Salzburg. In case of bad weather and between March and June the city wall is closed.
