This ancient castle is enthroned on a hill, Festungsberg, above the historic city centre. No matter whether you prefer climbing up there by foot or taking the funicular, both starting at Kapitelplatz, from the top you will enjoy fantastic views of the Old Town along with the surrounding mountains.
From Kapitelplatz it is just a few steps to the St. Peter's district with its famous cemetery (also known as the place the Trapp family was hiding in the Sound of Music movie). Stop by for tasting delicious breads and pastry at the St. Peter's abbey bakery before walking along to St. Peter's abbey on a beautiful square.
The house the genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born in 1756 in Getreidegasse 9, is the most famous museum in Salzburg. However, there is another house, „Tanzmeisterhaus“, that used to be Mozarts living place, which is situated on the right side of Salzach river, at Makartplatz close to the Trinity Church, and absolutely worth a visit, too.
The „Old Marketplace“ and streets closeby are great for shopping on your city walk, with various shops in bourgeois houses originating from the 18th and 19th century. Enjoy ancient flair and fantastic pastries in café Tomasselli and vis-à-vis café Fürst, the world-famous manufacturer of the original Mozart Kugel chocolates.
This ancient square with a beautiful baroque fountain is bordered by the Old and New Residence and the Cathedral. In winter, Salzburg's largest Christmas market is located on Residence Square.
Passing the Cathedral Arches from Residence Square, you enter the Cathedral Square (Domplatz) with the stunning baroque Cathedral (Dom). Cathedral Square is also famous for staging the „Jedermann“ during the Salzburg Music Festival in summer.
In this ancient, carefully restored building you will find our favourite museum out of the six Salzburg Museum exhibitions. An absolutely great place to marvel and learn about the art and cultural history of the city. Enter the New Residence building from Mozart Square, with the famous Mozart monument, next to Residence Square.
On a short walk over the Salzach river the Mirabell Palace and Mirabell Gardens with its beautiful flowers are absolutely worth a visit and great for relaxing. Mirabell palace inhabits one of the World's most romantic wedding sceneries for a civil wedding ceremony, the Marble Hall.
Over a ride on bus no. 25 you will reach Hellbrunn Park and Hellbraune Palace. Hellbrunn Palace, built some 400 years ago by famous archbishop Markus Sittikus, is a mythical place embraced by a beautiful park, offering recreation but also sights like a Roman stone theatre and the Crown Grotto. Next to the castle, you should not miss out the magical world of the trick fountains in summer.
Being another original „Sound of Music“ shooting location, this ancient castle is situated just a short walk from the historic city centre. As admission to the house and park is restricted to invited guests (it has become a famous wedding and event location in the past years), we recommend to enjoy the most beautiful view and picture set of the castle from the other side of the little pond (Leopoldskroner Weiher).
Salzburg with its Salzach river banks and parks offers like Hellbrunn or Mirabell many facilities for relaxing from sightseeing activities. But if you stay a little longer in our beautiful city, we absolutely recommend a daytrip to the landscapes of Salzburg, the natural jewels: our lakes and mountains. For swimming in summer and skiing in winter, do not miss out lake Fuschlsee, lake Wolfgangsee and the mountains and ski areas like Zell am See, Flachau or Zauchensee. Whether you prefer guided walks or hiking adventures, swimming or sailing activities, skiing or other sports, the countryside of Salzburg offers perfect conditions for all kinds of fun & sports activities.
